This summer UH LIS Assistant Professor Noriko Asato had a busy "CJK" summer. She started the summer out as a Visiting Professor at Kyoto University's Graduate School of Education. She is working with Professor Kawasaki Yoshitaka on the history of Intellectual Freedom in the United States. She also met with a team of LIS scholars from other parts of Japan.
She later partook in a University of Rhode Island Study Tour of the People's Republic of China with Dr. Yan Ma. She visited Peking University and Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, in addition to exploring many libraries and historic sites. She also gave a brief talk on a panel at the Shanghai International Library Forum.
This fall Dr. Asato spent two weeks on a Korea Society Korea Fall 2010 Fellowship. She visited several historical sites, and the library at the Academy of Korean Studies, and the Cheongju Early Printing Museum.

Singapore LIS Education
In October 2009 Dr. Brendan Luyt of Nanyang Technological Univeristy's Wee Kim Wee School of Communication & Information came to LIS and gave a fascinating talk on librarianship in Singapore.

More recently, our own Erenst Anip gave a talk this fall for the SLA-ASIST Student Chapter on his Summer internship at the National University of Singapore.

It was a fascinating talk. Singapore has a dynamic library system.

LIS Exchange with the University of Tsukuba
In March 2010 Professor Donkai and three students from the University of Tsukuba came to the UH LIS Program as the first part of a developing exchange program between the UH LIS Program and the University of Tsukuba.

In May 2010 UH LIS Professor Asato and Wertheimer went to the University of Tsukuba for a one week study visit. We visited the National Diet Library, National Archives of Japan, ICU, Tokyo Metropolitan Central Library. Rachel and Erika later experienced libraries at the University of Tsukuba.

Tsukuba is the home of many leading LIS scholars as it is in Japan's "Science city" and also was home to the former (National University of Library and Information Science). We look forward to continuing this exchange.

The University of Hawaii at Manoa already has exchange agreements with several prestigious universities in Japan with respected LIS Programs, such as Keio University and the University of Kyoto. Please talk with Dr. Asato if you are interested in exploring this option.
